The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education issues three kinds of Educator Licenses. In addition to using Licensure Help and ELAR educators can Contact the Licensure Office to learn about becoming licensed or renewing a license.
Academic (PreK - 12) Licenses for teachers, administrators, specialist teachers, and professional support personnel are generally required for employment.
Vocational Technical EducationLicenses for teachers, administrators, and cooperative education coordinators are generally required for employment in state-approved vocational technical education programs.
Adult Basic EducationThe ABE License is a voluntary license. By statute, the Department does not require this license; however, employers have the option of using this license as part of their hiring criteria.

Q: How do I verify that I completed an approved educator preparation program outside of Massachusetts?
A: To verify completion of an approved educator preparation program outside of Massachusetts, please submit:
- An official transcript that includes an endorsement statement; or
- An official transcript and a completed endorsement form found at visit http://www.doe.mass.edu/educators/verifyreciprocal.doc; or
- An official transcript and an endorsement statement on official school letterhead, signed by the Registrar, Dean, or Certification/Licensure Officer.
