Job Searching Advice from a Career Changer...
I started the process shortly after receiving my acceptance into the MINT program in early April, 2000. I initially determined the geographical radius that fell within a reasonable commuting distance for me, then identified all of the public high schools that fell within that sector. This numbered about 30 in all. I then contacted all of them by phone to see if any relevant science positions were posted or likely to be posted soon. I would then follow up with each one at regular intervals, since the situations of the schools often seemed to be quite fluid. Sometimes, in fact, the response I received varied considerably within the same school from one phone call to the next. I remember, for example, that the reception I received from one school on my first call was rather cool from the secretary whom I spoke with. On the next call, however, I was quickly connected directly with the principal, who was extremely eager to receive my resume! I was advised by several schools to consult the local Sunday newspaper, as that was where openings would be publicized, and I established mail subscriptions to both the Springfield and Worcester Sunday newspapers. Although things started off slow for me in April and May, all of this effort seemed to pay off in early June when my phone began to ring continuously. In the end, the science chair at "X" High School called me when a position opened up, based on a letter I had originally sent to the school in April, followed up by a letter in May that included an update on an additional certification I had received in Chemistry, in addition to an earlier certification in Biology.
