Grants and Other Financial Assistance Programs: FY2013

Middle Grade Turnaround Initiative
Fund Code: 220-O

Purpose: The purpose of this state grant program is to provide support for a cohort of struggling middle schools in Springfield and New Bedford Public Schools.
Priorities: Building district capacity to support and intervene in struggling middle schools, particularly in areas aligned to key components of the Massachusetts Tiered System of Support. Priority will be given to schools with middle grades in the eligible districts that are in the 10th percentile or lower for all schools in the state.
Eligibility: Level 3 or 4 schools in Springfield and New Bedford Public Schools.
Funding: Funding for the grant will come from state targeted assistance funds. The total allocation for both eligible districts is $70,000; each district will receive $35,000.
Fund Use: Fund use must be consistent with applicable state and federal requirements. All expenditures must go towards middle grade turnaround efforts, including partnering with district and school level consultants to secure necessary planning and implementation support.

Funds may be used for:
  • Consultants/vendors; and
  • Other related expenditures.
