Grants and Other Financial Assistance Programs: FY2013

Mathematics and Special Education Leadership Team
Fund Code: 255A

Purpose: The purpose of this federally-funded Mathematics and Special Education Leadership Team continuation grant is to provide funds to support districts' continued efforts to improve classroom instruction in mathematics for students with disabilities in grades four through eight. The goal of the grant is to maintain a school-based leadership team comprised of school-based mathematics and special educators as well as administrators with district representation who will continue to collaborate to support improved mathematics instruction for students with disabilities.
Priorities: This continuation grant will support proposals that seek to maintain the leadership team as its plan and implements activities that will improve classroom instruction for students with disabilities. Activities should include but are not limited to:
  1. strengthening collaboration between mathematics and special educators
  2. maintaining the leadership team which includes: mathematics coach(es)/teacher leader(s), special education mathematics coach(es)/teacher leader(s), principal(s) from the target school(s) and a district-level administrator
  3. implementing the team's strategic/sustainable plan to continue improving mathematics instruction for students with disabilities
Eligibility: Eligibility is limited to the districts that completed the grant requirements for Fund Code 255 in FY12. (Boston, Brockton, Fitchburg, Leominster, Lowell, Randolph.)
Funding: A total of $54,000 is available for this grant program through August 31, 2013. Approximately $9,000 is available per school. These calculations are based on assumptions of stipends for four people on the leadership team and for professional development for 20 teachers at the school. Costs can be adjusted up or down depending on the number of staff. The Department anticipates it will fund up to 6 districts. Pending the availability of funds, it is anticipated that similar amounts will be available as continuation grants in FY14.
