No Child Left Behind

For Parents & Guardians

Involving parents and families as full partners in the education of their children is a cornerstone of the federal No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). When families support learning, children are more successful in school and school success helps children become successful adults.

Supplemental Educational Services

  • What are Supplemental Educational Services? Supplemental Educational Services (SES) are free tutoring in the areas of math, reading, and language arts. They may be provided before or after school and during the summer.

  • How do I know if my child is eligible for free tutoring? You can receive this extra help if your child's school is in its second year or later of "school improvement," is a Title I school, and your family meets the income limits under the law. Your local school district must let you know each year if your child is eligible for SES. You can view a list of schools required to offer SES tutoring here: http://profiles.doe.mass.edu/ayp2007.aspx?mode=school&orderBy=.

  • What is Title I? Title I is a federal program that provides funds to schools for students to meet state standards. To become eligible, schools have to meet federal requirements that are based on economic criteria.

  • How do I arrange free tutoring for my child? You must request it from your local school district. You can then select a provider approved for the district from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's list of approved providers.

  • What factors should I consider in selecting a provider? Choose a tutoring program that is best for your child. Consider: where and when the provider offers services, how often and for how long students will be served, how students are grouped during tutoring, whether the provider can meet the academic needs of your child, the qualifications of your child's tutors, how student progress will be measured, and how parents will be kept informed, among other issues.

  • Can I request assistance from my child's district in selecting a provider? Yes. You may request assistance from your child's district in selecting a provider, including providers that can serve children with disabilities and with limited English proficiency. Your child's district is required to offer help in choosing a provider that meets your child's specific learning needs.

  • Will my child's records be kept private? Yes. Local school districts and providers are prohibited from disclosing the identity of any student without parental consent.

  • How will I be kept informed of my child's progress? Your local school district will sign an agreement with the provider you select, and the provider will then provide services to your child and report on their progress to you and to the district.

  • Where can I go for more information about Supplemental Educational Services?

    • Contact the principal of your child's school. You may also contact the parent liaison or Title I Director of your local school district. The principal or the district will have that information.
