Creating a Math Library for Grade 1 Children: Connecting Math and Literature

The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is pleased to offer a new resource for first grade teachers, a bibliography of grade 1 level trade books titled "Creating a Math Library for Grade 1 Children: Connecting Math and Literature."

This bibliography lists a selection of math books that address the five strands presented in the Mathematics Curriculum Framework: number sense and operations; patterns, relations, and algebra; geometry; measurement; and data analysis, statistics and probability.

From Counting Caterpillars and Other Math Poems to Mission Addition, these books that are aligned with the grade 1 learning strands not only introduce and teach math skills but they inspire children to learn and to have confidence in their own thinking. In integrating literature with math, the books easily engage students using colorful illustrations and real life situations to stimulate and deepen the learning of math concepts and skills. By using the books to introduce math concepts, students are excited to learn and often think of extensions for the learning such as acting out the story or creating poems related to the math. Many of the books offer art appreciation and science integrated with literature and the math skills.

Teachers may wish to create a math library in their classrooms or include these books in the school library. The books may be sent home for students and parents to share to deepen student learning and promote the "love of math!"
