Program Description:
The Building Energy Efficient Maintenance Skills (BEEMS) program prepares students for positions in the hospitality, property management, and construction industries. Students are selected through a process of assessments and an interview. Students who score below 6th grade in math take a mandatory four- week remedial course. In math classes, arithmetic, geometry, and estimating units are contextualized to lessons in building walls; installing windows, doors, and flooring; mixing concrete, epoxies, cleaning compounds, and landscaping chemicals; and purchasing drywall, tiles, carpet, roofing shingles, paint, and molding. Students learn how to calculate return on investments to inform purchasing decisions for plumbing and electrical systems, fixtures and accessories, as well as appliances, sensors, and detectors. In English classes, students learn workplace English, maintenance vocabulary, and customer service vocabulary. Madison Park provides shop space for the training classes. The program teaches the fundamentals of appliance repair, carpentry, cleaning, electrical repair, general maintenance, painting, and plumbing. In addition, students are trained in energy efficiency in buildings and occupational safety and receive OSHA 10 Certification.
