Smith will offer PCA/HHA/CNA training to Center ESOL students. The ESOL students are recruited from all four of Center's program sites in Amherst, Greenfield, Northampton, and Turners Falls. For the PCA classes, Smith will use the Personal and Home Care Aide State Training curriculum developed by the University of Massachusetts Medical School Area Health Education Center. Center and Smith instructors will collaborate to contextualize the curriculum and communicate regularly so that Center ESOL teachers can adapt their lesson plans to prepare students, reinforce lessons, and provide support for students who need additional assistance. HHA/CNA lessons will include body systems and infection control, restorative skills, bathing, and safety. Center ESOL teachers will integrate applied math into ESOL classes, introduce healthcare vocabulary, read and discuss case studies, and role play typical work situations. The partnership also includes the Franklin Hampshire Regional Employment Board, whose healthcare counselor is providing career coaching to participating students, and the Franklin Hampshire Career Center, which will offer a tour and host a job fair specifically for these students. Linda Manor will serve as the clinical site.
