Program Description:
UMASS provides contextualized ESOL CNA instruction and Coastal Career Academy provides CNA workforce training. The ESOL instructor uses CNA course terminology, readings, communication scenarios, and healthcare-related math and writing. The ESOL instructor supports the Coastal Academy registered nurse on teaching skills such as taking vital signs, and bathing, dressing, and positioning patients through a combination of lecture, role playing, and lab practice. The CNA curriculum includes personal care skills; nutrition and hydration; confusion, dementia, and Alzheimer's; body systems; and rehabilitation and restorative care. Students also receive certification in First Aid, CPR, HHA, and Alzheimer's. Through a union-management training benefit between Brandon Woods and the 1199SEIU Training and Upgrading Fund, graduates employed at Brandon Woods can obtain pre-paid tuition vouchers at public colleges and universities for health-related programs.
