2007 Massachusetts Literacy Champions Awards Program

Dear Friend of Literacy:

Are you, or is someone you know a literacy champion? The Massachusetts Literacy Foundation (MLF), in partnership with Verizon, is proud to support the Literacy Champions Awards. The awards were created to identify, publicly recognize and reward Massachusetts educators who have shown exceptional commitment and results through their work in literacy education.

Unlike many singular awards, the Literacy Champions Awards recognize multiple individuals, practices and programs. Each year up to ten Literacy Champions are chosen from a competitive nomination pool by a panel of peers and experts in the field of literacy education. The Champions serve as ambassadors for literacy and share their work in literacy with educators across the commonwealth. Publication of their promising practices, including strategies for effective literacy programs, are published in the Boston Herald and distributed statewide.

The MLF is currently soliciting applications for the 2008 awards. The deadline to apply is August 30, 2007. Applications may be submitted online or by post.

Each literacy champion receives two grants: a $2500 grant directed to the organization where the champion works, along with a $1000 grant to support the individual winner's professional development in the field of literacy.

Sincerely,

Carol Anne Conroy
President
