Requirements and Licensure
Adult Basic Education Teacher Requirements
Adult Basic Education (ABE) teachers are not required to be licensed; however, employers have the option of requiring a license for employment. In order to receive a formal evaluation to determine your specific requirements, you must apply for a license.
2 types of license:
Provisional: A Provisional ABE license requires the applicant to hold a bachelor's or a master's degree, to have a passing score on the Communication & Literacy Skills Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure (MTEL), and to have a passing score on the Adult Basic Education MTEL. The Provisional license is valid for five years from the date of issue.
Professional: There are four routes through which prospective and experienced ABE teachers may pursue a professional Adult Basic Education Teacher's license. Each route includes a performance assessment and a demonstration of teaching. The Professional license is valid for five years and renewable for additional five-year terms. It is not necessary to hold a Provisional ABE license before applying for a Professional ABE license.
