Requirements and Licensure
Teacher Leader Requirements
Through the Race to the Top Career Ladder for Teachers project, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (ESE) seeks to create more opportunities for teachers to take on specialized roles and responsibilities in recognition of excellence in teaching, contributions to the school, and collaboration with colleagues. In order to create a Career Ladder for teachers, ESE has committed to developing a series of performance-based endorsements, which will be optional certifications that a teacher could add to his or her license.
In addition to creating these types of opportunities, the Career Ladder for Teachers is also intended to foster a common understanding of teacher leadership. Currently, teachers often formally or informally assume leadership roles, but both the name and the responsibilities associated with such positions vary widely. Through recognizing, formalizing, and defining specialized Teacher Leader roles, the Career Ladder endorsements will promote a shared vision of teacher leadership.
Any updates or new developments will be posted on this page and the Department's home page
