Rachelle Engler Bennett, Director of Learning Supports and Early Learning (OLSEL)
June 2, 2014
Please note that the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (Department) will now redistribute unclaimed Fiscal Year 2013-2014 (FY14) Academic Support funds. These funds will be available to FY14 grantees as allocation increases, to be used for new or increased summer 2014 Academic Support grants (Fund Code 625), upon request on a rolling basis until all available funds are encumbered.
Eligible lead applicants are school districts, approved private special education schools and collaboratives that will be running summer 2014 Fund Code: 625 (for 7/1/2014-8/31/14) and/or ran school year 2013-2014 Fund Code: 632 (for 9/1/2013-6/30/2014) Academic Support Allocation Grant programs. If applying with partners who are also eligible entities, the proposal may request the combined amounts of the eligible entities. Districts may request to increase their allocations by $5,000 (for use during July 1- August 31, 2014). Approved private special education schools and collaboratives may request to increase their allocations by $2,000 (for use during July-August 2014). If desired, grantees can request to increase their allocations by less than those amounts.
To request these funds:
- email a completed addendum form and revised budget/budget narrative pages (new budget pages if you have not already applied for a Fund Code 625 summer grant) to firstname.lastname@example.org; and
- mail the Learning Supports and Early Learning (OLSEL) Unit a Fund Code 625 Part I Signature Page (see address on form).
Requests will be reviewed and approved on a rolling basis, and the total number of requests may exceed available funds (a total of approximately $200,000), so please submit the required forms as soon as possible. A note will be posted in the Academic Support News section when all funds have been requested. We anticipate that this year all available funds are likely to be requested by early-mid June, but it could be sooner or later. All applicants for the increase will be notified of approval status within approximately two weeks of submission.
The purpose of these supplementary funds is to create or enhance summer academic support in English language arts (ELA), mathematics, and science and technology/engineering for students in the classes of 2003-2018 who are participating in summer MCAS Academic Support programs, in order to help these students meet the Competency Determination required for a high school diploma. Programs may use the funds to create, increase, or enhance services as well as to convene professional learning communities.
Fund use may include, but not necessarily be limited to: stipends for teachers and partners to implement and plan activities in the summer program(s); program-related professional development; relevant instructional materials and resources; and transportation, if needed, to enable student participation in services.
Please contact the Learning Supports and Early Learning (OLSEL) Unit via email@example.com or 781-338-3010 with any questions you may have.
