The Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education

Update on Holyoke Receivership

To:
Members of the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education
From:
Mitchell D. Chester, Ed.D., Commissioner
Date:
May 8, 2015

Since the Board's vote on April 28 to take receivership of the Holyoke Public Schools, I have been devoting considerable time to addressing and meeting with district officials, students, parents, faculty, and media, and reaching out to enlist the many talented and committed educators, city officials, and residents of Holyoke in the effort to improve the educational system for all students in the city. We are actively exploring receiver candidates and I hope to be able to announce the receiver by the end of the month. In the interim, I am the district receiver. We have begun the process of convening a Holyoke local stakeholder group to provide input to the district turnaround plan. The Department's Holyoke team, led by Senior Associate Commissioner Russell Johnston, is overseeing district operations and receivership implementation. He and I and Deputy Commissioner Alan Ingram will update the Board in more detail at the May 19 meeting.
