At the October Board meeting I presented an overview of the results of the spring 2008 administration of the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS). As part of my overview I provided you with several graphs displaying students' grade 10 MCAS performance in English language arts and mathematics, 2002-2008, by race/ethnicity, low income status, special education/general education, and limited English proficiency. The graphs illustrate that the performance of all students has improved, but the achievement gap between and among various groups is persistent and unacceptably wide.
In the course of our discussion at the October meeting, the Board requested that similar graphs be generated for other student groups, in particular, for males and females. In response, enclosed are additional graphs that illustrate grade 10 MCAS performance and achievement gaps among students by gender and other student populations.
I hope you will find the data useful. Please contact me if you have further questions.
