Interdisciplinary Health Education and Human Services Advisory Council
This Council is advisory to the Commissioner and Board of Education in the areas of legislation, regulations, and guidelines related to instituting comprehensive health education and services in the public schools for all students and their families. The council is made up of health professionals, concerned representatives of the public and the public schools, and representatives of other state agencies, as described in the Education Reform Act.
Council Statement
We have a large Advisory Council with extraordinary expertise from Early Childhood to Higher Education, with nurses, health educators, physical educators, school psychologists and counselors, other health specialists, and representation from other state agencies. A major project in the past was the development of "A Guide to Implementing Your District's Wellness Policy," a brochure outlining steps that schools and communities can take in support of the wellness policy that all districts were required to develop under Section 204 of the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004. During the 2011-2012 school year, the focus of the Council will be on making recommendations for the revision of the Massachusetts Comprehensive Health Curriculum Framework and for strengthening school wellness policies to align with new Massachusetts and federal legislation. Additionally, the Council provides feedback and advice to ESE staff on several aspects of the Coordinated School Health Program workplan.
