Explore the New 2011 Massachusetts Curriculum Framework for Mathematics
Mathematics Framework Exploration Activities are a growing set of activities designed by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education mathematics staff and educators. Exploration activities help districts introduce the new 2011 Massachusetts Mathematics Curriculum Framework to a variety of audiences.
We recommend that educators first attend or download and review the PowerPoint presentation, titled: "Overview: Focus on the 2011 Massachusetts Curriculum Framework for Mathematics" Download PPT Document size: 2.4 MB. This Overview provides background information about the development of the new standards and outlines the key changes and features of the new 2011 Mathematics Framework.
Once you have completed the Overview, check out the Mathematics Framework Exploration Activities and share them in the order that best fits your needs.
Exploration Activities are:
- designed as starting points for Massachusetts educators to begin engaging with the new standards;
- organized around the key ways in which new mathematics standards are different from the previous standards and seek to illustrate the increased FOCUS, COHERENCE, CLARITY, and RIGOR of the new standards;
- intended primarily for teacher teams but are adaptable for other audiences (such as administrators, preservice teachers, higher education faculty, curriculum coordinators, etc.); and
- comprised of a package of materials that includes a PowerPoint presentation, facilitator's notes, and resources (such as handouts).
We hope that you find these activities useful as a starting point for introducing the standards in collaborative contexts. Feel free to modify the activities to fit your needs and please provide us feedback using the survey links under each activity.
