Introduction to the Education of Advanced, Talented, and Creative Learners

Location:Isenberg School of Management, UMass Amherst, Room 108

For K-12 teachers, administrators and related education professionals
Prerequisites: None

This course is designed for teachers at all grade levels. It addresses significant aspects of the role, knowledge base and understandings required of an educator whose goal is to serve the needs of advanced, talented and creative learners. A holistic approach, rooted in constructivism, which takes into account students' strengths, needs, and preferred learning styles will be emphasized throughout the course.

The major topics to be covered are as follows:

  • definitions of and perceptions concerning intelligence;
  • characteristics of this population and issues relating to identification;
  • models of service delivery;
  • essentials of curriculum design and pedagogy, with a particular focus on inclusive teaching strategies and differentiated instruction within the regular classroom;
  • factors that must be considered when implementing specific teaching strategies, methodologies and activities to address the learning needs of advanced, talented and creative learners;
  • the roles and responsibilities of various stakeholders, including educators, other professionals, parents, governmental agencies, professional associations, and the business community in supporting, mentoring and advocating for this population of students as well as issues concerning educational equity and strategies for implementing school change.

Admission is by permission of the course instructor. Applications should be received by Friday, June 12. Applicants should apply as soon as possible since, in the past 3 years, there were many more applicants than spaces available in the course. Students will be selected from the pool of applicants. A registration fee of $45 and materials costs (about $100) are to be paid by participants.

Creative and Critical Thinking Strategies in the Classroom with Emphasis on Advanced Learners

Location:Barnstable Middle School, 895 Falmouth Road, Hyannis

For Teachers in Grades K-8
Prerequisites: None

This course will engage learners in the understanding of creative and critical thinking through active participation in a great variety of individual, small group, and large group activities. Humor as an essential component of creative thinking will be emphasized. A wide variety of readings and resources will increase each participant's repertoire of behaviors, strategies, and student activities. Participants will significantly modify their curricula in order to increase students' critical and creative thinking.
