Content-Based ESL Curriculum Development Workshop

Course Description:
The Content-Based ESL Curriculum Development Workshop is an introduction to the tools that the Department has developed over the last several years to assist districts and ESL teachers in developing ESL curricula and curricular units based on academic content. These tools are based on the ESL curriculum framework, the Massachusetts English Language Proficiency Benchmarks and Outcomes (ELPBO). The goal of this workshop is to assist teachers in developing plans for content-based ESL instruction that are strategically designed to help students meet learning outcomes set forth in the ELPBO. Participants will leave the final meeting with a useable product that can be piloted during ESL instructional time in the upcoming school year.

Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Assessments for ELLs: An Equitable Approach

Course Description:
Using a culturally responsive framework modeled on the current RTI method, the Institute will equip school and district teams with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate and effective identification, assessment, and interventions for English Language learners (ELLs) experiencing difficulties in school. Participants will learn ways that linguistic and cultural factors influence an ELL's perception, cognition and interactions, and the implications of those factors for interpreting academic performance. Participants also will become familiar with a wide range of assessments, develop awareness of which assessments are appropriate for specific purposes, identify and evaluate a range of instructional support strategies utilizing a problem solving model, and develop an action plan for systemic and individual interventions supporting the needs of ELL students. State and Federal laws will be reviewed, and effective ways to work with parents will be presented.
