Talking About Sex Safely: An Advanced Practice Course for Experienced Classroom Sexuality Educators

Location:Hoagland Pincus Conference Center, Shrewsbury MA
Intended Audience:Health Teachers
Prerequisites:Experienced Health Educators who have completed a basic course in teaching human sexuality. This course assumes that participants have been providing sexuality education for at least two years and already have updated information on HIV, STDs, birth control and effective curriculum strategies. This course will teach participants to broaden their curriculum to include more aspects of sexuality and make their program relevant and appropriate for all students.

Course Description:

This graduate level course focuses on human sexuality from a student-centered perspective. Teachers will examine what students want to know, what they need to know and how best to communicate with a diverse population. The course emphasizes the skills needed for both teachers and students in discussing sensitive areas of human sexuality. This course will NOT teach basic concepts of anatomy, physiology, pregnancy, disease or prevention. It will expand the definitions of sexuality to encompass identity, emotions, relationships, self-respect, pleasure, values, self management and more. Teachers will reflect upon their own skill and knowledge level and will develop lessons that embody best practices that combine content with skill acquisition. Participants will examine the cultures of their students and adapt lessons to be effective with all students.

Dates:June 28, 29, 30 and November 10 with on-line and in-district work July-November.
