First Annual Civics Literacy Conference

The First Annual Civics Literacy Conference, "Serving America: Promising Practices for Building Literacy and Civic Learning" took place on Monday, May 23, 2016 at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the U.S. Senate in Boston. More than 250 educators and representatives from community organizations convened to focus on the role civic learning plays in maintaining our democracy and steps that may be taken to increase civic knowledge and engagement among K-12 students. Following a welcome from President MacCormack of the Kennedy Institute, Commissioner Chester delivered the keynote address. Representative Alice Peisch, Co-chair of the Joint Committee on Education, was one of a number of workshop presenters. Meira Levinson, professor of education at Harvard Graduate School of Education and author of Making Civics Count and No Citizen Left Behind, made the case for the importance of building civic learning and engagement during her plenary presentation. ESE is grateful to all the presenters for sharing their expertise and the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for their partnership in hosting the event.
