College and Career Readiness

Massachusetts Recommended High School Core Program of Studies

On March 27, 2007, Commissioner Driscoll recommended the following course of study to the Massachusetts Board of Education.

Massachusetts Recommended High School Core Program of Studies (MassCore)
English/Language Arts 4 credits
Mathematics 4 credits
Including the completion of Algebra II or complete the Integrated Math equivalent. All students are required to take a math course during their senior year.
Science 3 credits of lab-based science
History/ Social Science 3 credits
Including US History and World History
Foreign Language 2 credits
Of the same language
Physical Education Health As required by law
shall be taught as a required subject in all grades.
Electives 6 credits
Visual and Performing Arts, Career and Technical Education, Technology, or any of the subjects above
 22 Total Credits
Additional Learning Opportunities Complete as many of the following as possible:
  • Advanced Placement (AP)
  • Capstone or Senior Project
  • Dual Enrollment: courses taken for both high school and college credit
  • Online course for high school or college credit
  • Service Learning
  • Work-based Learning

High schools may have other local graduation requirements that apply to all students. Courses included in MassCore should be rigorous, engaging and based on appropriate grade level standards in the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks.

* The Science and Technology/Engineering Framework include standards in four strands:

  • Earth and Space Science
  • Life Science (Biology)
  • Physical Sciences (Chemistry and Physics)
  • Technology/Engineering

** Vocational-technical high school graduates who do not complete the two required college preparatory foreign language courses may fulfill the Massachusetts Core Curriculum by adhering to the Board of Higher Education's Admissions exception allowances Download PDF Document.
