Office for Food and Nutrition Programs

FY2019 Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) Training Opportunities (January – April 2019)

To:
Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) Sponsors
Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) Sponsors
From:
Robert Leshin, Director
Office for Food and Nutrition Programs
Date:
January 4, 2019

The updated meal standards for the CACFP are available for Children, Infants, and Adults. All CACFP sponsors were required to comply with the new meal pattern requirements no later than October 1, 2017. The USDA has elected to extend the transition period for sponsors who were working to implement the new meal pattern; through FY19 sponsors will be provided technical assistance instead of a disallowance if the meals provided do not meet the new standards.

As required by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), Office for Food and Nutrition Programs will provide training opportunities to CACFP sponsoring organizations on program regulations and operations for FY19. This memo includes detailed information including registration links for all trainings available through the second quarter of FY19 (ending 4/30/2019). Additional memos will be distributed each quarter with the details and registration links for training events held during that time period.

The following training events are currently available for registration:

  • CACFP- Back to Basics: These full-day, in-person training events will be offered regionally throughout the Commonwealth, and will provide a comprehensive look into the operation of the CACFP from application and eligibility, through claiming and monitoring. These trainings will provide opportunities for participants to understand program requirements, including required records, claims, and monitoring materials. This training is a perfect opportunity for staff new to CACFP to become familiar with all aspects of CACFP operation. If a sponsor has an open CAP, they are required to attend one of these trainings. For all other sponsors, it is highly recommended that a representative attend one of these training events to ensure compliance with program requirements.

  • CACFP Review and Updates Webinar: This webinar will provide a review of the essential aspects of operating the CACFP, as well as a review of all memos from both USDA and DESE which impact the way Sponsors operate their programming. It is recommended that all sponsors attend this webinar to ensure compliance with program requirements.

  • Procurement Practices in Child Nutrition Programs Webinar: This webinar will provide an overview of procurement requirements and practices for Sponsoring Agencies in Special Nutrition Programs (both CACFP and SFSP). The webinar will outline all procurement practices, for Sponsors who purchase goods and services through a vendor and those who purchase goods and services directly. The webinar will address the federal threshold requirements for procurement, and what Sponsors should be doing for each type of procurement.

  • CACFP Eligibility Series Webinars: This series of webinars will review the requirements and forms necessary for establishing eligibility in different CACFP program types. These trainings will provide detailed overview of what is required for assessing eligibility, where to gather the necessary information, and how to complete all the forms accurately. Each webinar will be dedicated to a specific Sponsor and program type; please only register for the event(s) which apply to your sponsorship.

Registration is required for all trainings as space is limited. A "Certificate of Participation" with total training hours documented will be available for registered participants who have confirmed attendance for a completed training. Any questions about identifying the appropriate training sessions to attend can be directed to Shannon Raymond.

For registration assistance please contact Marisol Montes by telephone at 781-338-6480 or by email at mmontes@doe.mass.edu. You will receive confirmation of your training registration via email.
