Standard First Aid Training
As many of you are aware, the Department has purchased and installed Automated External Defibrillator (AED) units and First Aid Kits on each floor. The AED machines are easy to use units based on computer technology designed to analyze heart rhythms and advise the operator of the next steps in rendering first aid. The AED machines allow for a shock to be administered to the victim of a sudden cardiac arrest so the victim may survive until professional emergency response personnel arrive. They are designed to be used by lay people and require minimal training to become certified.
A number of staff are trained in Adult CPR, First Aid and the use of the AED machines. The Training Unit is gearing up to offer two sessions per month for interested employees. One session will cover Adult CPR and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training and the other session will cover First Aid training. By the end of these trainings, participants will be certified in First Aid, Adult CPR, and administering aid using the AED machines.
Each session being offered is limited to eight participants. Candidates should be willing to help anyone in need and must be able to remain calm in response to high stress situations. Keep in mind that you may be required to respond quickly in an emergency situation. The Department is especially interested in volunteers who have previous first aid, Adult CPR, or first responder experience. Ideally, we would like to have at least one person from each floor attend this training. Please contact Carole Corthell, ADA Coordinator, in the event that you wish to participate and feel that you need a reasonable accommodation to do so at ext. 6204 or ccorthell@doe.mass.edu.
If you are interested in being considered for any of these training opportunities and meet the criteria listed above, please consult with your supervisor and submit your name and your preferred training date(s) by the close of business as soon as possible.
