"Service-learning is a teaching and learning approach that integrates community service with academic study to enrich learning, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities." -From the National Commission on Service-Learning 2001
CSL Project Example
Through the Community Service-Learning Partnership Initiative Grant, Greater Lowell Technical High School partnered with the Lowell Boys and Girls Club to re-design and renovate the boy's locker room and the 48' x 60' game room. Students brainstormed, discussed, and proposed ideas and solutions before, during and after the project. Student learning was enhanced through daily reflection activities as well as teacher-guided, student round table discussions with the Boys and Girls Club. This ensured that students provided appropriate and needed service and also reinforced learning standards set forth by the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks.
