Commonwealth School Leadership Project

Leadership Across Massachusetts

School districts, collaboratives, and preparation programs across Massachusetts are committed to strengthening education leadership. A number of districts have participated in grant-funded initiatives designed to strengthen the leadership of superintendents, principals, and school leaders toward the objective of improved student performance. Some examples of innovative leadership programs are below.

Chelsea

Chelsea Public Schools has worked closely with the Massachusetts SAELP initiative as one of the Leadership Development Demonstration Districts. While Chelsea's planning for leadership development preceded the SAELP project, participating as a demonstration district provided the district with time and focus. Chelsea's specific focus addressed the cultivation of native talent for assistant principal and principal positions.

Chelsea Public Schools believes that with the set-aside of at least one administrative internship each year, the district will be able to develop cooperative identification and selection procedures and design a suitable leadership development program to support novice school-based leaders.

The focus of Project LEAD is to:

  • License aspiring Principals/Assistant Principals
  • Support aspiring Principals/Assistant Principals in approved programs
  • Support existing Principals/Assistant Principals
  • Recruit a pool of highly qualified candidates for Principals/ Assistant Principals

Boston

Boston Public Schools believes that school leadership is the single most important factor in schools' success. For this reason, Boston created Boston Principal Fellows (BPF). BPF is a program to develop a generation of school leaders for the Boston Public Schools who begin their careers as principals possessing the knowledge and skills required for success. BPF is customized to the school leadership competencies that Boston defines as most important and immerses participants in the daily work of effective school principals.
