The Career/Vocational Technical Education unit administers the state law governing vocational technical education programs in public school districts. The unit also administers the federal Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Improvement Act of 2006 P.L. 109-270 (Perkins IV).

Definitions of Two Important Titles

• Career and Technical Education (CTE) Programs - In Massachusetts, those programs that meet the definition of career and technical education contained in Perkins IV.

• Vocational Technical Education (VTE) Programs - In Massachusetts, those programs that meet the definition of vocational technical education contained in Chapter 74 of the Massachusetts General Laws, and are approved by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education pursuant to Chapter 74 and the Vocational Technical Education Regulations. Such approved programs are known as Chapter 74-approved vocational technical education programs. Note that all Chapter 74-approved vocational technical education programs meet the Perkins IV definition of career and technical education and therefore, they may also be known as career and technical education (CTE) programs.
