Educator Evaluation

Training Videos and Workshops for Teachers

The training videos and workshops for teachers provide important Overview information on the educator evaluation framework, as well as specific videos and four workshop sessions designed to prepare teachers and other educators to be active participants in their evaluation. ESE developed these resources in partnership with Massachusetts teachers. Used together, the videos and workshops will provide teachers with clear, actionable information about the evaluation process.

Districts (through their schools) can use a variety of settings to present these materials. The workshops are designed to be led by a department head or grade/team lead in a small group setting, such as common planning time. Some, however, may want to deliver the sessions to a school's full faculty. For example, an administrator might present a video and workshop during a faculty meeting, with staff breaking into small groups for the work components of the session.

Training Workshops: Orientation

The Orientation consists of a PowerPoint presentation that describes the most important aspects of the educator evaluation frameworks for teachers and staff. The Orientation reviews the purpose of the evaluation framework, the two ratings everyone will receive, the 5-Step evaluation cycle, and key characteristics of the evaluation rubric.

Training Workshop 1: Rubric Review

The purpose of this workshop is to ensure that educators understand the Standards and Indicators on the performance rubric, as well as the evaluation scale (Unsatisfactory to Exemplary). This workshop is based on the ESE Model Teacher Rubric, but schools that have chosen to adapt the Model Rubric or created their own rubrics can modify the workshop to match their own rubric.

Options for More Comprehensive Teacher Training

Districts may choose to provide the Training Modules to deliver more comprehensive training to their staff, either in place of or in addition to the videos and workshops. Districts and schools could also offer a customized combination based on local need. For example, a district might provide: 1) the Orientation, 2) workshops for Unpacking the Rubric and Self-Assessment, and 3) the complete Module 4 on setting S.M.A.R.T. goals followed by a workshop to create team S.M.A.R.T. goals.
