Educator Preparation

Elevate Preparation: Impact Children (EPIC)

Our work is driven by our moral imperative that all children in Massachusetts, especially students who need the most, must have access to effective teachers and leaders. EPIC is a series of projects that address three troubling and closely related problems, (1) first-year teachers are disproportionately hired into underperforming schools Download PDF Document  Download MS WORD Document, (2) first-year teachers are often placed in classrooms with our neediest students Download PDF Document  Download MS WORD Document, and (3) these new teachers are not as well equipped Download PDF Document  Download MS WORD Document as experienced teachers to help students grow academically. Because teacher growth is most accelerated at the beginning of a career, EPIC focuses on preparing teachers to make a greater impact from the first day they enter classrooms. By doing this, we will systemically raise the growth and impact trajectory for teachers and simultaneously address the academic, social, and emotional needs of thousands of students in the Commonwealth.

EPIC builds on the work we have undertaken since 2012, which includes: creating incisive data sets that are shared by Ed Prep programs and PK-12 districts, heightening accountability with a more rigorous process of review, and implementing new professional standards and performance assessment that align expectations for preparation candidates with those used to evaluate current educators. EPIC will take this work further with a series of projects serving three driving goals:

Goal 1: Deepen and extend the quality of our teacher candidates' field-based experiences
Goal 2: Promote and support data-driven analysis and continuous improvement among providers
  • Develop the Educator Preparation Annual Snapshot of the most instructive data for every organization in the Commonwealth
  • Develop more robust and accessible Edwin Analytics Reports
  • Facilitate Formative Feedback Reviews by an external evaluator and studying our organizations' subsequent continuous improvement efforts
Goal 3: Integrate the efforts of providers and partners to meet the increasing demands for human capital
  • Facilitate a Diversity Initiative that uses focused recruitment, preparation and support efforts to increase the diversity of the educator workforce
  • Lead a Student Teaching Partnership Consortium with district-organization partners
  • Funding and studying innovative district-prep partnership models.
