Recruitment of Program Reviewers for Educator Preparation Program Approval
The purpose of Department of Elementary and Secondary Education approval of educator preparation programs is to assure the public that teachers and other educators who complete programs in any of the 43 license areas are prepared to educate preK-12 public school students according to the learning standards in the Massachusetts curriculum frameworks. We are seeking team members with demonstrated expertise in subject matter knowledge, professional education, teaching, research and evaluation. We recognize that review team members are essential in the evaluation of educator preparation programs, and we value the knowledge and expertise team members bring to this process.
When will the reviews be scheduled?
- The next cycle of program reviews is scheduled to begin in Winter 2010.
Who is eligible to serve as a team reviewer?
- PreK-12 school-based practioners including teachers and administrators
- Educator preparers including faculty, program coordinators and administrators of institutions of higher education, collaboratives and district-based programs
What kind of commitment is required of reviewers?
Timeline:
- Prior to the program approval visit, reviewers will:
- Read assigned program(s) documents, and
- Complete scoring rubrics.
- The review team will meet for two days for the program approval visit.
- Reviewers must have email access.
Document Review:
- Under the guidance of the team chairperson and our program approval coordinator, team reviewers will discuss assigned program documents for compliance with requirements in the Regulations for Educator Licensure and Preparation Program Approval.
How are team reviewers assigned?
- Assignments are determined by the reviewers' area(s) of expertise.
- Reviewer assignments are determined by the programs for which a sponsoring organization requests approval.
What are the benefits to being a team reviewer?
- Team reviewers have an opportunity to enhance their professional expertise and to contribute to the preparation of educators.
- Professional Development Points for license renewal will be available to all team members.
Are reviewers remunerated for their service?
- Reviewers are reimbursed for their round trip mileage and any toll charges.
- The sponsoring organization assumes all other costs of the program approval visit, except reviewers' personal incidental expenses.
- The team chair will receive a small stipend for preparing the written report.
