The Model Professional Development Grants are funded through the Federal Technology Literacy Challenge Funds. They are intended to provide innovative technology professional development activities (workshop series, institutes, and credit courses) to selected teacher leaders so that they will act as mentors in their districts in using the technology to support the Learning Standards and the Curriculum Frameworks.
This year, 44 districts were chosen from 111 proposals submitted. The decisions were made by volunteer readers working in education or educational technology and endorsed by the Commissioner of Education and the Board of Education. The monies were awarded in the fall, and must be spent by 8/31/2000.

The Bancroft School plans to establish a professional development training and publishing center. This center will offer teacher leaders (both in and out of district), parents and other professionals the opportunity to learn how to utilize portable Alpha Smart word processors to enhance the various stages of the writing process. The training schedule will include four one day workshops, four after school SIG support groups, and two parent/community trainings. Teacher leaders will be taught strategies for integrating writing and technology into all aspects of the curriculum. |

Using the train the trainer and mentor models, 14-19 Teacher Leaders from the Boston, Cambridge and Watertown Public Schools will be selected to participate in a 30-hour workshop. The first 15 hours will be dedicated to training in the specialized areas of instructional and assistive technologies. The second 15 hours will support collaboration among the mentor teachers, consultants, and the teacher leaders in the development of the Technology for Inclusion curriculum. Each Teacher Leader will offer a 15 hour Technology for Inclusion workshop in their district in the Fall of 2000. |

Mentor Teachers from the Dennis-Yarmouth School District will participate in a series of technology integration workshops. Lead Teachers at the fourth and fifth grade levels from the nine EDCO member districts will participate in a cross district program to share and enhance their use of technology in the mathematics classroom. The nine districts include: Arlington, Bedford, Belmont, Brookline, Lexington, Sudbury, Watertown, Weston, and Winchester. Training will include one full day, two after school and one Saturday workshop as well as a variety of in-district team meetings and work sessions. The mentors will utilize new mentoring skills developed through their training to assist their colleagues in the classroom. Additionally, they will offer 6 hours of training in the summer. |

The Fall River School Department will expand on an existing mentor model to train 10 additional technology coaches, along with the 23 coaches already in place. At the completion of the training each of the 30 elementary schools in the district will have one technology coach to help lead and support the use of technology. The training will include 4 inservice days. From October through August a monthly workshop series will be implemented by the technology coaches. These workshops are open to all Massachusetts public and private teachers and will focus on practical applications of technology within the classroom. |

The training will include classroom demonstrations, personal and small group consultation by mentors, after school instruction, and participation on curriculum design teams during Summer Institutes, 2000. The two summer institutes will focus on the district's Social Science and Mathematics Curriculum and will involve 40 participants in two three-day sessions. |

Teacher leaders from the rural school districts of Frontier Regional/Union 38 will receive training on the web-based curriculum "Turns of the Centuries." This curriculum is a multi-grade web-based humanities curriculum resource which focuses on New England and Massachusetts history using primary resources. A variety of technology professional development activities will be provided to support the teacher leaders in effectively implementing the web-based curriculum. In addition training in a variety of technologies will be offered in a year long series of workshops to support this project. |

Technology mentors from each of the Hampshire Collaborative districts will participate in a year-long professional development institute. The twelve four-hour after school training sessions will focus on: the use of software appropriate to standards-based curriculum; the use of instructional management software to support student achievement and the use of online courses. This grant supports a mentoring program in the Harwich Public Schools. Twenty mentors from each grade level in the district will receive two days of training in preparation to train their peer group. Mentor teachers will learn how to use the Harwich teacher computer training lab and Microsoft PowerPoint to construct classroom presentations. They will also learn how to post a department Web page on the school's web server. Following their own training, mentors will use the computer lab for two days each to train their mentoring group. |

The Holliston School District will use this grant to further implement their Technology Target Skills 2000 program. The two main goals of this program include the development of technology proficiencies among faculty and staff, and the employment of technology masters within each building. The Ipswich Schools will implement a series of six full-day workshops to be developed and facilitated by FreshPond Education, Inc. over the 1999-2000 school year and the following summer. Grade two through eight classroom teachers, special education teachers, and the Language Arts Subject Area Committee will participate in the project. The workshops will address the issues of creating a sustained system-wide approach to authentic assessment of student writing samples across grade levels. Topics such as the creation of writing rubrics, the assessment of student writing, and the use of technology to improve language art skills will be covered. |

The Superintendency Union 31 (K-6 schools of Halifax, Kingston, Pembroke and Plympton) will use this grant to expand upon and enhance their mentoring model for teacher professional development. Three teachers per building will be trained in AppleWorks as an instructional tool, video editing technology, electronic mail, listservs, and use of the web for instruction and collaboration. Training will also focus on the integration of technology to achieve the goals of the Curriculum Frameworks. The teacher mentors who begin training in the Fall of 1999 will be required to conduct trainings for others in the Fall of 2000. |

Lawrence Public Schools will train classroom teachers, district curriculum facilitators and technology specialists in the use of CLASP (Curriculum Library Alignment Sharing Project). The group of 30 curriculum facilitators and technology specialists will be trained by CLASP personnel in a "Train the Trainer" model becoming the district experts in the use of CLASP. These trainers will develop and facilitate workshops for classroom teachers that focus on curriculum-aligned lessons and on using the CLASP software and template. |

The Williams Middle School will establish a Model Technology Integration (MTI) team of 15 teachers representing each grade level (5-8) and each academic area. The MTI team as well as other non-team staff will attend a 3 day, hands-on workshop provided by the Tom Snyder Software Company. This will be followed by a six-week (30 hour) Professional Growth Course called "Integrating Technology into the One-Computer Classroom" with a focus on how to use cooperative groups and learning stations. The team will complete their training with 10 follow up workshops focused on strategies for peer coaching and mentoring. The final stage is for each team member to mentor another member of the faculty in the use of the one-computer classroom. |

Both districts will conduct additional training for "technology coaches" on computer applications, project-based learning and curriculum integration techniques focusing on the Curriculum Frameworks. In Mendon-Upton the technology coaches will offer eight one-hour after-school sessions of training to their colleagues, to be followed by eight hours of informal support. In Ashland the technology coaches will receive training in the form of four two-hour after-school workshops. In stepping beyond traditional TPD workshops, activities will include but not be limited to attendance at state and national conferences, membership in professional organizations, building-based technology integration workshops, and on-line/distance learning courses. BTIs will provide "On-line" mentoring through a formalized process that utilizes the district's conferencing/email system. The goal is to engage all students, especially visual learners, in the excitement of learning, while giving students and teachers new means for assessing student achievement and conceptual development. In the Spring, teacher leaders will conduct action research in their own classrooms. In the Summer, teacher leaders will offer intensive one-day workshops to other teachers in the school system. |
