9 Instructional Technology Preservice Grant Recipients for 1998-1999
The Preservice grants are funded through the Federal Technology Literacy Challenge Funds. The purpose of this grant program is to integrate the use of instructional technology into teacher preparation programs. School districts, in partnership with colleges/universities, will work together to extend the experiences of the preservice students in using technology to support teaching the curriculum frameworks.
This year, nine school districts were chosen from twelve proposals submitted. One hundred and fifty preservice students are impacted by this grant. Salem State College, the University of Massachusetts (Amherst), Springfield College, Endicott College, Gordon College, Boston College, Worcester State College, Clark University, and Boston University are the higher education institutions that are partnering with the nine school districts.

Beverly's Hannah Elementary School's multi age 4th and 5th grade classroom is a Lighthouse Classroom. This project partners the Hannah Elementary School with Salem State College and Endicott College Preservice Program. The classroom teachers will begin the fall semester with junior block students from Salem State and Endicott College. The higher education partners will participate in the technology workshops to familiarize them with technology integration and classroom software. |

Boston University students will design and implement lessons grounded in the frameworks that incorporates new technologies. A portion of the grant would be used to provide the Alcott School in Concord with a Mac Lab that would be utilized both by the Alcott School teachers and by the Boston University students for technology professional development during the school year. The program will begin with the Spring semester (January through May). |

The Frontier Regional teachers will pilot the Turns of the Century curriculum. Turns of the Centuries is a web based curriculum Preservice training project that integrates computer technology into the teaching of Social Studies k-12. Training will be provided for Preservice teachers from the University of Massachusetts and their faculty on the use of technology in project based learning. |

Gordon College and Georgetown School District are working together to design Gordon's Preservice experience. Two Early Childhood Preservice teachers will be assigned to one classroom. Technology training will include professors, cooperating teachers, and Preservice teachers. The technology training will include: integration of content software, designing projects, assistive technology, use of scanners and digital cameras. |

The grant funds will be used to develop the instructional technology Preservice program at Springfield College. The college will conduct training to Preservice candidates, Hampden Wilbram teachers and college based educators. The coordinators have identified six areas that will be included in the program: technical classroom survival skills, using the Internet as an instructional tool, web publishing, multimedia software, tool assessments, peripherals. |

The Ipswich Public Schools and Salem State College are using this project to form a partnership for training prospective and existing teachers in the area of instructional technology. Preservice teachers will be placed in Ipswich's 21st Century Lighthouse classrooms. They will utilize technology as an instructional tool at all points of the teacher preparation program in order to encourage students to think creatively and critically. |

This project is a joint effort of the Newton Public Schools and Boston College School of Education. The project will enhance the instructional technology skills of student teachers, cooperating teachers, and faculty members. The faculty and teachers will learn Internet and multimedia technologies. A February meeting at Boston College will bring the faculty and Preservice students together to share projects they have worked on that infuse technology into the curriculum. |

This project will develop educational technology components for all existing education courses at Worcester State. The members of the education faculty and lighthouse classroom teachers will work cooperatively to develop instructional technology units of instruction for each education course. They will provide professional development for Worcester State Educational Faculty, Preservice and Sutton teachers. A mentor program will be set up within the Sutton School District and technology rich classroom teachers will mentor newly hired teachers at their respective grade levels. |

The overarching goal of the collaborative between the Worcester Public Schools and Clark University is to establish the conditions for demonstrating, supporting and sharing the effective uses of technology in instruction. Grant funds would be used to provide stipends for team members to support after school training sessions, and to support training in the use of technology during the summer institute program. Clark University will develop and integrate an instructional technology strand into their pre-practicum courses. |
