Massachusetts Foreign Languages Curriculum Framework
Communication Strand, Grades PreK-12
Standard 1. Students of modern languages will converse in a language other than English to provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
Standard 2. Students will understand and interpret ideas and information written or spoken in a language other than English.
Standard 3. Students of modern languages will write and speak in a language other than English to present information, concepts, and ideas on a variety of topics.
Cultures Strand, Grades PreK-12
Standard 4. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the traditions, perspectives, practices, and products of the culture studied, including human commonalities as reflected in history, literature, and the visual and performing arts.
Comparisons Strand, Grades PreK-12
Standard 5. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the nature of language through comparison of the language studied with their own. In classical language study, discussion and writing will be in English.
Standard 6. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the concept of culture through comparison of the target culture with their own.
Standard 7. Students of modern and classical languages will use the target language to reinforce and expand their knowledge of other disciplines and to acquire new information and knowledge.

Standard 1. Demonstrate proficiency in the use of computers and applications as well as an understanding of concepts underlying hardware, software, and connectivity.
1.53 Know how to select and use search engines. Understand the differences between search engines.
1.57 Create a multimedia presentation, desktop-published report, or Web page that incorporates data from other files.
1.60 Select the appropriate technology tool for a task.
Standard 3. Demonstrate ability to use technology for research, problem-solving, and communication. Students locate, evaluate, collect, and process information from a variety of electronic sources. Students use telecommunications and other media to interact or collaborate with peers, experts, and other audiences.
Grades 9-12
3.12 In conducting research use all appropriate electronic sources (e.g., Web sites, online periodical databases, online catalogs).
3.15 Present information, ideas, and results of work using any of a variety of communications technologies (e.g., multimedia presentations, Web pages, videotapes, desktop-published documents).
3.16 Collect, organize, analyze, and graphically present data using the most appropriate tools (e.g., spreadsheet, database, graphing, and concept-mapping tools).
