Project Description
Gateway Middle School has been involved in the Atlantic Salmon Egg Rearing Program, which was designed to reintroduce the fish to the Connecticut River and its tributaries, including the Westfield River, located across the street from the school. This program has enabled students to study the life cycle of the salmon through a wide variety of experiential learning activities in the classroom and surrounding environment. In addition to raising the salmon and releasing them into the river, students researched salmon on the Internet and then shared what they had learned by creating multimedia presentations, making presentations for their peers, and participating in videoconferences.

This project has involved staff, community members, college professors, and environmentalists. It provided students with numerous opportunities and experiences while empowering them with a greater understanding of science, technology, and their natural environment.
