Uncovering the Quabbin
New Salem-Wendell Regional School District

Evidence of Effectiveness

Instructional objective: Students will demonstrate technology and historical research skills while learning about the history of both the Quabbin and the local New Salem-Wendell area.

Evaluation: The classroom teacher evaluated the children's final fact sheets, including imported scanned photos and supporting documentation. The classroom teacher and technology integration specialist observed students verbally sharing their knowledge with others during the unit and during the family event. The teachers also evaluated technology skills by examining the images that the students produced with digital cameras, scanners, and editing software.

Student improvement: As a result of this unit, the students' content and technology performance improved in many ways. The students' improvement in meeting the History and Social Science Curriculum Framework standards was evident in the final written products and in the student-created materials that became part of the class web site. The students were able to share with family and community members their knowledge of Quabbin and New Salem history during the unveiling of the class web site.
