Georgia O'Keeffe Inspired Art
New Salem-Wendell Regional School District

Description of Activities

  • The students were introduced to the work of Georgia O'Keeffe.
  • The students then sketched flower images from live models using mixed media (oil pastels & watercolors).
  • After creating sketches, the students created their interpretive artwork with mixed media.
  • The teacher demonstrated how to use the scanner and had the students practice using it. Then the finished artwork was scanned and imported into image editing software (i.e., Photoshop).
  • The students manipulated their scanned artwork, creating and printing three pieces of computer-generated artwork from their original interpretive artwork.
  • With the classroom teacher, each student wrote poetry in response to his or her original artwork and one of the computer-generated pieces.
  • As a culminating activity the teacher created a book of classroom artwork and poetry. The students made oral presentations of poetry and exhibited artwork within the school setting (classroom presentation and school-hosted community event). The artwork was also exhibited at a restaurant in Amherst, Massachusetts.
  • Universal Design/Inclusion
Three to four adults assisting in the computer lab during this project ensured that all students were able to participate. Staff members provided each student with individualized help on an as needed basis. All students in the class completed the project as instructed. The class only used a few select filters from the broad range of filters available with Adobe Photoshop. This helped the students master the skills without being overwhelmed with options.
