Project Description
After reading aloud the book The Patchwork Quilt by Valerie Flournoy, each student brought in pictures of family members and special friends. Students then used a word processor to write about their pictures and to summarize the main ideas of the book. Next students created miniature paper quilts by scanning their photographs, cutting geometrical shapes from them, and manipulating the shapes. Students also constructed a small bed for their quilts from oaktag paper. Using spreadsheet software, students found the perimeter, area, and volume of the bed and quilt they designed. Finally, each student designed a beautiful and unique book jacket, with a synopsis of the book on the inside flap.
