Technology Self-Assessment Tool (TSAT)

The TSAT has been designed for:

  1. Teachers: to determine their own levels of technology proficiency and to identify personal technology professional development needs.
  2. Schools/Districts: to assess their professional development needs and to plan professional development activities that will help all teachers become proficient in technology.
  3. The State: to gather and report data on technology competencies and technology professional development.

The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education adapted the Technology Self-Assessment Tool developed by the Boston Public Schools in 1997. In 2010, the state's Educational Technology Advisory Council updated the TSAT so that it aligns with the Massachusetts Technology Literacy Standards and Expectations adopted in 2008.

The Technology Self Assessment Tool is available as an Excel file Download MS EXCEL file and as an interactive tool on the Massachusetts Online Network for Education (MassONE). The interactive tool makes it possible for administrators to access aggregated data from their teachers in order to better focus their professional development efforts.

To use the Excel file Download MS EXCEL file, simply print the file and then check off the technology tasks that you know how to do. Put a check only if you are able to do all of the examples given. This questionnaire should require about 15 minutes of your time.

To use the interactive tool, log on to MassONE, click the TSAT icon at the bottom of the screen, and follow the instructions. You will need to have a MassONE account in order to access the TSAT. To register for a free account on MassONE, click the Teachers link on the MassONE home page.

In order to access aggregated data from teachers in your district who have taken the TSAT, you need to be authorized by your district's superintendent and assigned the role of TSAT District Administrator by your district's MassONE administrator. Once you have this authorization, simply log on to MassONE, click the Admin icon at the top of the screen, select "TSAT Administration," and follow the instructions.
