The Signing Bonus Program recruits outstanding recent college graduates and mid-career professionals to teach in Massachusetts public schools. In 1999, a corps of 59 teachers was selected from 800 applications. The teachers were trained in an intensive seven-week summer institute and placed in predominantly high-need districts throughout the state in 1999. The teachers continue their training with veteran teacher mentors in their schools and in seminars with other Bonus Recipients. Teachers earn a $20,000 salary bonus, distributed over the first four years of their career. They receive $8,000 in the first year and $4,000 in each of the three subsequent years. They must retain the status of full-time public school teacher to receive the bonus.

Up to 125 bonus recipients will be chosen in 2000. To date, over 1000 individuals have attended 37 information sessions at colleges and universities across the country, and the Department's website has been contacted 23, 231 times since October 1999.
We are actively recruiting candidates in math, science, and foreign languages. In order to reach a wide-audience, we have undertaken innovative recruiting programs, including securing the placement of 200 placards on Boston-area subway cars in January 2000 and notices in the paychecks of every state employee in early January.
Attached are press clips from the 1999 national recruitment campaign.
