Why Mentor?

As a veteran teacher, you've faced your share of challenges that are common in this profession. You can probably remember every difficult moment that you encountered as a novice teacher, and have since developed your own strategies and skills to use in tackling such issues. Mentoring a beginning teacher gives you the opportunity to share your valuable insights with someone who not only has fewer years of experience, but who could benefit from this type of support.

How Do I Become Involved in My District's Program?

Mentoring is not only a good idea, it's a requirement. All Massachusetts school districts have been asked to develop an induction program that must include a mentoring component for teachers in their first year of practice. Each one of these first year teachers is to be paired with a trained mentor within the first two weeks of teaching. The general qualifications and application processes for mentor selection and assignment as well as the parameters for mentor training are determined by each individual school district. Contact your district's central administration office to ask how you might become involved.

What are the Benefits of Participating in an Induction Program?

The benefits of becoming a trained mentor teacher in your district can be far-reaching. By contributing to an atmosphere of collegiality, you are improving the working conditions for every teacher in your school. You become known as a leader in your profession and you have the ability to help your new colleagues grow professionally and personally. If you choose to pursue certification through the national board for professional teaching standards, in addition to your mentoring duties, you may become eligible for designation as a Massachusetts Master Teacher, and receive monetary bonuses as a result.
