National Teachers Hall of Fame Induction Program

To:Superintendents, Principals, Teachers and Other Interested Parties
From:David P. Driscoll, Commissioner of Education
Date:November 2003

I am pleased to share information on the National Teachers Hall of Fame Induction Program. The mission of the National Teachers Hall of Fame (NTHF) is to recognize exemplary preK-12 teachers and to share the expertise and accomplishments of these teachers as stellar examples of the teaching profession. One of the most important components of the NTHF is the annual Teacher Recognition Program. The NTHF annually honors five teachers who have demonstrated commitment and dedication to teaching our nation's children. Anyone can nominate a teacher by completing a nomination packet.

Candidates eligible for induction into the NTHF must have (or have had) at least twenty years of full-time classroom teaching responsibility in grades pre-kindergarten through high school. Candidates may be current or retired teachers, must be (or have been) licensed as a public or nonpublic school teacher, and must be available to attend induction ceremonies. Selection is by a national committee of educators and friends of education.

Individuals inducted into the National Teachers Hall of Fame will serve as ambassadors for the NTHF and must uphold the standards of excellence set forth by the educational community.

I urge you to distribute this information throughout your system to make this material accessible to educators and community members.

Nomination forms may be obtained by calling (620) 341-9131 or 1-800-96TEACH, or by writing The National Teachers Hall of Fame, 1320 C of E Drive, Emporia, KS 66801. Nomination forms are also available on the NTHF website, www.nthf.org.

Nomination packets must be postmarked on or before Tuesday, January 6, 2004.
