Massachusetts Teacher of the Year Program
1998 Massachusetts Teacher of the Year
Good morning,
Because Mr. Penniman means so much to me, I chose to speak for myself today. So, if you have difficulty understanding what I say, a copy of my speech was handed out with your program.
What makes Mr. Penniman such an outstanding teacher? I could easily think of 50 reasons why Mr. Penniman deserves this award. First of all, he has a wonderful personality. Mr. Penniman is patient and forgiving of mistakes. He listens. He uses his wonderful sense of humor to relieve tense moments. He is so energetic and hard working.
But, I feel the most important reason is that Mr. Penniman has faith in each student's potential. He accepts each student the way he or she is and guides him or her to discover a broader minded and deeper self. I experienced this while working with him on the high school newspaper for three years. He focused on my ability, not my disability. He encouraged me to develop my abilities and forget about my disability. I am forever stronger and more comfortable being myself because of him. Thank you, Mr. Penniman for believing in me.
Today, I represent all the students Mr. Penniman has encouraged and supported in their personal growth. I am proud and honored to introduce the 1998 Massachusetts Teacher of the Year, Bruce Penniman.
