Sheltered English Immersion has two components,
  • English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction, and
  • Sheltered content instruction.

Sheltered Content Instruction Professional Development

Since the 2003-2004 school year, the ESE has developed and sponsored professional development for content teachers, elementary and secondary, who have English language learners in their classrooms. This professional development has been aligned with one of the 4 Categories of Skills and Knowledge for Teachers in SEI Classrooms. The Department has also offered Training of Trainers opportunities in Categories 1, 2 and 4.

Lists of DESE Authorized Category Trainers as of September 2011

These lists includes names, districts and e-mail addresses of Category trainers who have completed the ESE-sponsored trainings of trainers ("TOTs") and can provide training in the Category or Categories indicated. Training provided by these individuals in the Category or categories listed is considered aligned with ESE training requirements. These trainers are responsible for submitting the list of participating teachers to the ESE. ESE is providing contact information only, and, in publishing this list does not recommend any particular trainer. The district assumes all responsibility both contractual and financial including, but not limited to: providing the training materials, the costs associated with the training, compensation to the trainer and providing PDP certificates to participants. The district also assumes responsibility for checking references concerning the quality of trainers it hires.
