Contest Background:
The Massachusetts Family Literacy Consortium (MFLC) invited parents to write about the value and benefit of family literacy in their lives. A 13 member panel of judges representing the Office of the Commissioner of Education, several state agencies including Commonwealth Corporation and the Department of Transitional Assistance, businesses, community organizations, and legislators selected three stories for our Family Literacy Success Story Contest 2001.
Subsequently, the Massachusetts Coalition for Adult Education (MCAE) conferred its Outstanding Student award to the three parents.
On October 25, 2001, three parents were honored during an awards luncheon at an adult education statewide conference. The event culminated when surprise guest Mary Rafferty, Regional Director of Public Affairs at Verizon Communications, awarded a computer and printer to each family.
Judges placed all success stories in one of four categories: contest winner, family leadership award, spirit award, and special recognition. All contestants received a certificate and family pass to the Children's Museum. Four parents, whose stories were placed in the family leadership category, each received a $50 Barnes & Noble gift certificate.
We thank Verizon, the Children's Museum, and Barnes & Noble for supporting the Family Literacy Success Story Contest and donating prizes to the families.
