Domain - Number and Operations—Fractions

Cluster - Build fractions from unit fractions by applying and extending previous understandings of operations on whole numbers for fractions with denominators 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 100.

[4.NF.B.3] - Understand a fraction a/b with a > 1 as a sum of fractions 1/b.  [Note: Grade 4 expectations in this domain are limited to fractions with denominators 2,3,4,5,6,8,10, 12, and 100.]

    A number expressible in the form a/b where a is a whole number and b is a positive whole number. (The word fraction in these standards always refers to a nonnegative number.)

    Apply properties of operations to add. For example, when adding numbers order does not matter. If 8 + 3 = 11 is known, then 3 + 8 = 11 is also known (Commutative property of addition). To add 2 + 6 + 4, the second two numbers can be added to make a ten, so 2 + 6 + 4 = 2 + 10 = 12 (Associative property of addition). When adding zero to a number, the result is the same number (Identity property of zero for addition). [Note: Students need not use formal terms for these properties]
