Discipline - Physical Science

Core Idea - Waves and Their Applications in Technologies for Information Transfer

[6.PS.4.2] - Use diagrams and other models to show that both light rays and mechanical waves are reflected, absorbed, or transmitted through various materials. Clarification Statements: Materials may include solids, liquids, and gases. Mechanical waves (including sound) need a material (medium) through which they are transmitted. Examples of models could include drawings, simulations, and written descriptions. State Assessment Boundary: State assessment will be limited to qualitative applications.

Resources:

Predecessor Standards:

  • 4.G.A.1
Draw points, lines, line segments, rays, angles (right, acute, obtuse), and perpendicular and parallel lines. Identify these in two-dimensional figures.
  • 4.PS.4.2
Develop a model to describe that light must reflect off an object and enter the eye for the object to be seen. State Assessment Boundary: Specific colors reflected and seen, the cellular mechanisms of vision, angles of incidence and reflection, or how the retina works are not expected in state assessment.

Successor Standards:

  • HS.PHY.4.3
Evaluate the claims, evidence, and reasoning behind the idea that electromagnetic radiation can be described by either a wave model or a particle model, and that for some situations involving resonance, interference, diffraction, refraction, or the photoelectric effect, one model is more useful than the other. Clarification Statement: Emphasis is on qualitative reasoning and comparisons of the two models. State Assessment Boundary: Calculations of energy levels or resonant frequencies are not expected in state assessment.
  • HS.ETS.3.2
Use a model to explain how information transmitted via digital and analog signals travels through the following media: electrical wire, optical fiber, air, and space. Analyze a communication problem and determine the best mode of delivery for the communication(s).

Same Level Standards:

  • WCA.6-8.7
Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects to answer a question (including a self-generated question), drawing on several sources and generating additional related, focused questions that allow for multiple avenues of exploration.
