Cluster - Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas

[SL.6.4] - Present claims and findings, sequencing ideas logically and using pertinent descriptions, facts, and details to accentuate main ideas or themes; use appropriate vocabulary, eye contact, volume, and pronunciation.   • Claim
    Statement taking a position on what is true, usually one with which reasonable people might disagree. See Argument in Text Types and Purposes, Evidence, Thesis.
  • Description
    An author’s use of words to illustrate a scene, event, phenomenon, object, or character; descriptions in literary texts usually contain carefully chosen imagery that appeals to the audience’s sense of sight, sound, smell, touch, or taste.
  • Main/central idea
    Concept illustrated or position taken by a text as a whole, whether stated explicitly (as in a how-to guide explaining a process or an essay defending a thesis) or conveyed implicitly (as in a novel or collection of short stories illustrating a theme).
  • Theme
    Central message or abstract concept made concrete through representation in a literary text. Like a thesis, a theme implies a subject and predicate of some kind: for instance, not just vice as a standalone word, but a proposition such as Vice seems more interesting than virtue but turns out to be destructive. Sometimes a theme is directly stated in a work, and sometimes it is revealed indirectly. A single work may have more than one theme. See Main idea, Moral.
  • Vocabulary
    Words known or used by a person or group, representing concepts or ideas and meanings mutually understood; also, all the words of a language. See Academic language/vocabulary, Domain-specific language/vocabulary.
