Verifying a GED

Obtaining Verification on Your GED

Letter of Certification

This is the procedure to follow to obtain verification that you have received a Massachusetts High School Equivalency Credential (GED): (We do not issue duplicate diplomas or copies of GEDs) Please note in Massachusetts GED® Score Reports/Transcripts do not indicate receiving a GED® credential only that the five tests were taken and passed. You must obtain the "Letter of Certification" for verification of your GED® status if you no longer have your actual GED® credential.

  1. Send a letter of request including all this information -

    • Name tested under,
    • SSN,
    • Date of birth,
    • Where tested,
    • Approximate date tested.

  2. Include a $2 money order (no cash or personal checks!) made out to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (there is a $2 charge for each Letter of Certification)

  3. Put your current address and telephone number

  4. If you want the Letter of Certification sent to somewhere other then your address - include that address also - be a specific as possible especially in regards to colleges.

  5. Sign the request and send it to the following address:
Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education
    GED® Processing
    75 Pleasant Street
    Malden, MA 02148-9120

Once a request is received the turn around time is approximately five to ten business days.

Telephone # 781-338-6625 if you need to talk with someone in the GED® Office.
To obtain a copy of your scores you need to contact the Test Center where you tested. Please see our GED® Test Centers webpage for addresses and phone numbers of the test centers.
