School administrators perform a variety of complex leadership duties that are vital for creating and maintaining effective learning environments. There are five fields of administrator licenses issued in Massachusetts: superintendent/assistant superintendent; school principal/assistant school principal; supervisor/director; special education administrator, and school business administrator. Administrators are required to possess advanced degrees and a license and experience working in another educational role, or in some cases, successful employment experience as a manager/leader in a non-educational setting. Administrators must also complete approved preparation programs that will equip them to meet the Professional Standards for Administrators.
