Specialist Teachers design and deliver instruction for students in specific academic programs that are typically conducted outside of the "mainstream" classroom. Massachusetts issues specialist licenses for teachers of Reading, Academically Advanced Education and teachers of students with Speech, Language and Hearing Disorders. In order to obtain a license as a teacher of Reading or Academically Advanced Education, one must hold an Initial (stage 2) or Professional (stage 3) license in another field and possess at least one year of teaching experience under that license. Specialist Teachers must also acquire and demonstrate specific subject matter knowledge to meet the requirements for licensure.
